Set up Seafile Client under MacOS

The Seafile client is a software that allows you to synchronize your data to a desired work computer. The range of functions is similar to the user interface in the browser, but it is much easier to use. This section explains how to install the client and how to use it afterwards.

To install the Seafile client, the setup file must first be downloaded. This can be found under the adjacent link. After successful download, the file must be opened. To do this, double-click on the downloaded file.

Once the file has been successfully downloaded, it must be opened. To do this, double-click on the file in your browser.
The installation window will then open: move the Seafile logo to the application folder and release it again.

Once the copying process is complete, you can start the client for the first time. To do this, open the application folder by double-clicking on it and run the "Seafile Client" app contained in it. You can confirm the security warning that may appear by clicking on "Open".

You will then be asked to specify a default folder for Seafile. By default, Seafile creates this in the user directory. If a different storage location is required, specify this and then click Next.

Note:
A folder called Seafile is always created under the specified path; your libraries are then downloaded to this folder.

In the window that opens, you will now be asked which server the client should connect to. Select the "Single Sign-On" option at the bottom left of the window.

The Seafile server address must be entered in the field that opens:
https://seafile.rlp.net
(Please enter exactly as shown!)

When selecting the institution, "RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau" must be selected here. You will now be asked to log in with your RPTU account.

IMPORTANT:
This is not your e-mail address. As a rule, you should have received an anonymized account name consisting of 3 letters, 2 numbers and 3 letters.

After entering the data, click on Login. The registration must then be confirmed again by clicking on "Log In (Universities)".

The main window of the Seafile client should now appear. Your libraries can be seen here. To synchronize a library, right-click on it and select the "Download and synchronize" option.

In the dialog that opens, you will be shown once again where the files will be synchronized to. You can confirm this by clicking on "OK".

Tip: Run the Seafile client in the background

To run the Seafile client in the background (similar to the Nextcloud client) some settings have to be changed!

To set this accordingly, open the main window of the client by clicking on the Seafile icon in the menu bar and "Main window". Now you can check the checkboxes marked in the screenshot and apply the changes by clicking on "OK".
