Mail - Send serial letters with Thunderbird

Note:
These instructions only apply to Landau identifiers!

Add add-on in Thunderbird

To be able to create and send serial letters in Thunderbird, the "MailMerge"add-on must first be added to Thunderbird. To do this, proceed as follows:

  1. In Thunderbird, click on the 3 dashes at the top right.
  2. In this menu, click on "Add-onsand Themes".

3. search for the add-on "Mail-Merge" in the search bar and click on
"Add to Thunderbird" for the corresponding add-on.

Alternatively, the add-on can also be downloaded from the following link and installed via the file:

addons.thunderbird.net/de/thunderbird/addon/mail-merge/

4. confirm the addition in the small menu that now appears.

5. the add-on has now been added to Thunderbird.

Create tax file (CSV)

A .csv file must now be created which contains information such as the names of the recipients and their email addresses. A spreadsheet program such as Excel or LibreOffice can be used for this. The file can be very simple, as shown in the example.
You can decide for yourself which data you need and expand the table as you wish. However, the e-mail address of the recipient
MUST be included.

  1. "name" and "mail" are so-called variables that are used later in the email and specify the data in the lines below. This data is then retrieved when composing. The names of the variables are arbitrary and do not have to be the same as in the example.
  2. The data such as names, e-mail addresses etc. are entered in the corresponding columns directly under the column heading (variable). There is no limit here. It is important that there is only ever one address or name per field.
  3. It is also important to ensure that the data that belongs together is in the same line.

Once you have entered all the required data, save the file with the file extension .csv. You can see how this works
in the following instructions:

  1. The name of the file does not matter
  2. To save the file as a .csv file, click on "File" and then on the "Save as" tab.
  3. Select any folder in which you would like to save the file
  4. Enter a name for the file.
  5. Open the drop-down menu in the line below.
  6. You will now see different file types. Select "CSV (delimited)" here and click on "Save".

Create mail merge in Thunderbird

The mail merge can now be created in Thunderbird. To do this, click on "Compose" as you would for a normal mail.

  1. Enter the value of the column heading in the line in which the recipient is written. In our example, this would be "mail".
  2. Place this value in a double curly bracket, as you can see in the image below.
  3. Now you can write the subject and the message of the mail merge as usual or add further variables.
  4. If you would like to call up a value from your table in the email text, write the desired variable name in a double curly bracket, as you would for the recipient.
  5. Once you have finished with the text, click on the "Mail Merge" button.

6. in the menu, open the drop-down menu under Source and select "CSV".

7 It is up to you which sending mode you choose. With "Send now", the email is sent immediately after leaving the menu. However, you
can also save your email as a draft and edit it later.

8. in the "CSV" section, the .csv file that you have created must now be selected under "File". To do this, click on "Browse" and navigate to the folder in which you have saved your file. Select your file and then click on "Open".

9. set the character set to "utf-8" and select "," for field separators as in the example.

The selection field for "Text separator" remains empty.

10. if you now click on "OK" at the bottom right, the mail will be sent to all recipients entered or saved as a draft, depending on the sending mode selected.
